Overview

The majority of people involved in research using digital research infrastructure (DRI) want to understand and reduce the emissions associated with their research activities to have a positive impact on the path to net zero emissions from research. The term DRI includes a very broad range of infrastructure from personal devices (smartphones, laptops, etc.), through high end servers (HPC and HTC systems) to commercial cloud computing resources. Although most people want to take action, they are hampered by a lack of understanding of the scale and source of DRI emissions, uncertain on what they can do in their day-to-day work, and find it difficult when challenged by colleagues or acquaintances who may be sceptical about taking action.

This workshop will provide insight into and expand on recent efforts to understand what skills are needed to empower researchers and other digital research technical professionals to make and advocate for positive impact in using DRI for research.

The workshop will have three different sessions:

Registration

Registration is free. The event is being held alongside the ARCHER2 Celebration of Science, which is on the 19-20th March 2026. You are welcome to register for this event alone or for both this event and the Celebration of Science.

Event Information

Lunch will be provided on the day. The registration form provides the opportunity to note any additional requirements you may have. However if you have any questions or concerns regarding this please do get in via events@archer2.ac.uk.

Travel support

We would be happy to provide support for a few participants whose organisation/projects cannot cover their travel costs to attend the event Championing Green Digital Research only (Day 0 of the ARCHER2 Celebration of Science 2026) or to attend both the Day 0 and the following 2-day ARCHER2 event.

If you would like to apply for this travel support, please complete the Travel Support Application Form and send it to the event organiser events@archer2.ac.uk by Thursday 5 February. All applications will be reviewed after the given deadline and we aim to inform the results to you as soon as possible.
